My éla Protect & Shine heat protectant spray reliably protects your hair from damage caused by hairdryers, straighteners, and curling irons – up to 230°C. Why heat protection needs to be rethought
Heat has become an indispensable part of our daily styling routine – I'm no exception. Blow-drying, straightening, and curling are all part of my routine – often for years. High-quality styling tools can temporarily smooth the hair cuticle with heat, resulting in a softer feel. However, in the long run, heat remains a stress factor for hair: moisture evaporates from within the hair shaft, proteins weaken, and the hair structure loses stability. Over time, this can lead to breakage, frizz, loss of shine, and a dry, lifeless feeling – even with good-quality tools. That's precisely what we want to avoid.
Study results
In an in-vitro laboratory study with repeated heat cycles up to 230 °C, the plant-based biopolymer of the éla heat protection spray showed less structural impairment than untreated hair and at least 50% less hair damage compared to the control.
Under the tested conditions, it also exhibited a more stable hair structure than the synthetic polymers tested in this study.
The results apply exclusively to these laboratory conditions. The study was conducted by SGS proderm, independently audited according to ISO 9001 (statistically significant, p < 0.001).
Wet or damp hair is particularly sensitive to heat. Studies show that the cuticle of wet hair can be damaged even at relatively low temperatures (from about 47°C). Therefore, apply heat protectant before blow-drying, dry your hair completely, and only straighten or curl it when it is 100% dry. For maximum protection: Apply strand by strand. Note: Do not spray into eyes. In case of contact, rinse thoroughly with water immediately.

Protection from the outside, strengthening from within
The targeted vitamin complex is the core of the internal conditioning effect: Panthenol (provitamin B5), niacinamide (vitamin B3 – known from the skincare sector) and vitamin B6 strengthen the hair structure and protect against breakage. They provide moisture and smooth the hair surface with an anti-frizz effect.
These vitamins work where styling puts the most strain on the hair: inside the hair fiber.The hair becomes more resistant to heat, feels smoother and looks visibly healthier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Polymers are not inherently plastic. The biopolymers used in this formulation are of plant origin and are not classified as synthetic microplastics*. They effectively protect hair from heat without weighing it down. They are also readily biodegradable.**

The greatest damage during styling is not caused by the heat itself, but by localized overheating of individual sections of hair. Effective heat protection therefore primarily ensures that heat is distributed evenly across the hair's surface. Plant-based polymers can be an excellent alternative: they form a flexible, heat-resistant layer around the hair and help to reduce extreme temperature spikes – even at high temperatures up to 230°C.
Plant keratins = proteins
When I talk about plant-based keratin, I'm referring to specifically selected plant proteins derived from wheat, soy, and corn. These proteins are structurally similar to the natural keratin in hair. They can adhere to damaged areas of the hair fiber, repair micro-cracks, and visibly smooth the hair structure. The hair feels stronger, appears more resilient, and is less prone to breakage.
Dry, healthy hair is significantly more resilient than damp hair. Under laboratory conditions, studies show that permanent damage to healthy, dry hair only occurs at temperatures above approximately 230°C if no heat protectant is used. Since very few people have perfectly healthy, so-called "virgin" hair, but rather hair that has already been damaged by coloring, UV radiation, or mechanical stress, the hair's heat tolerance decreases considerably. In such cases, a heat protectant helps to prevent further structural damage to the hair – at any styling temperature up to 230°C.
